Roberts Lofts on the Plaza
911 Locust Street
Board of Education Building : 1891
The seven-story St. Louis Board of Education Building was built by architect Isaac Taylor in the
neo classical Romanesque Revival style, to serve as the city's public library and house the St. Louis School
Board. The building has Art Deco interior finishes, vaulted and 16-foot ceilings as well as a sky-bridge to a
parking garage with reserved parking for residents. The lower two floors are of red sandstone and the upper
floors are all in buff brick.
The building was bought by brothers Mike and Steve Roberts and is currently being coverted into 47 luxury
apartments, including eight 3-level penthouse units, each with its own roof-top terrace. Rents will range
from $950 a month for a one-bedroom unit with 796 square feet to about $2,800 per month for a two-bedroom
unit with 2,200 square feet.
The $13 million project will incorporate around 8,000 square feet of specialty retail. The building is
located in the historic Old Post Office District downtown St. Louis and expected to open in the Fall of 2004.
