McGowan Brothers Development Company has purchased the 8-story building at 1601 Washington Avenue. The intent
is to provide five floors of commercial use and developing the remaining three floors into 33 residential
loft condominiums with prices ranging from $100,000 to $170,000. The building was originally used as the
power plant for the St. Louis Transit Company, one of the St. Louis' early streetcar lines. The building is
planned for renovation/adaptive re-use/multi-famliy residential at a cost of about $9 million. Construction
started Spring 2004 and was completed in December 2005.
